Aluminum branch circuit wiring went into Ontario houses during a fairly short period, and ESA's guidance is that a home built between the mid-1960s and late 1970s may have it. In Whitby that period lines up with a real slice of the housing: the Town's Housing Needs Assessment counts 7,700 dwellings built from 1961 to 1980. Not every one of those homes has aluminum wiring, but enough could that buyers, owners and insurers ask about it.
The wire itself is rarely the concern. ESA's notices trace the reported problems to terminations, where aluminum meets a device or connector that was not made for it, and to aluminum's tendency to oxidize. That is why a proper assessment means opening receptacles, switches, fixtures and the panel, and why the fix is either devices marked for aluminum, copper pigtails joined with approved connectors, or replacement with copper.
What Whitby Homeowners Should Know
The Electrical Safety Authority says a home built between the mid-1960s and late 1970s may have aluminum wiring, and recommends hiring a Licensed Electrical Contractor who knows the special techniques for aluminum to assess the wiring, make the necessary repairs and have the work inspected by ESA.

Pigtailing or Full Replacement: How the Choice Is Made
Pigtailing leaves the aluminum branch wiring in the walls and changes what happens at each end. At every receptacle, switch and fixture, a short copper conductor is joined to the aluminum with a connector marked for that combination, and the device then connects to the copper. Done at every termination point, it deals with the connections ESA identifies as the weak spot without opening walls.
Full replacement removes aluminum from the house. It makes sense when an insurer insists on copper, when walls are already open for a renovation, or when the circuits have been altered so often that pigtailing every point is impractical. ESA notes that some insurers require the aluminum to be replaced with copper, so ask your insurer what it will accept before choosing a route.
Whitby Houses Where Aluminum Can Turn Up
Aluminum wiring follows the year a house was wired, not a particular street. In Whitby it can appear in bungalows and split-levels from the 1960s and 1970s, and in older downtown houses whose wiring was extended or replaced during those years. The Werden's Plan heritage district plan describes that kind of mix, with nineteenth-century buildings and mid-century bungalows side by side.
A few clues are visible to a homeowner. Aluminum conductors look silver rather than copper-coloured where they enter the panel, and the cable jacket may be stamped AL or ALUMINUM. Devices marked CO/ALR suggest some terminations were already addressed. None of that replaces an assessment, because a house can have a mix of aluminum and copper circuits, and earlier repairs may have used devices that are not marked for aluminum, which ESA says must be replaced with CU/AL devices.
Paperwork, Insurance and Booking an Assessment
Whichever route you choose, KV Bear Electrical files the ESA notification as the Licensed Electrical Contractor and ESA inspects the work. Once it passes, ESA issues a Certificate of Acceptance; keep a copy for your insurer and for any future sale. If a full replacement includes a new panel, the power shutdown at the meter is booked with Elexicon as an isolation.
Our published ranges are $2,000 to $4,500 for pigtailing a typical three-bedroom Ontario home, and $8,000 to $15,000 or more for full replacement. The number of connection points and how easily walls and ceilings can be reached set the final figure for a Whitby house. Aluminum Wiring in Whitby: Common Questions
My Whitby home was built in the early 1970s. Does it have aluminum wiring?
It may. ESA says homes built between the mid-1960s and late 1970s may have aluminum wiring, but not every house from that period does. The way to know is to look at the conductors in the panel and at a sample of devices, which is the first step of an assessment.
Will my insurer accept pigtailing on a Whitby house with aluminum wiring?
Insurers set their own rules. ESA's notice says many insurers want the wiring inspected and repaired or replaced, with the work inspected by ESA, and some require full replacement with copper. Ask your insurer what documents it needs, and keep the ESA Certificate of Acceptance once the work passes.
Can I replace switches on aluminum wiring with ones from the hardware store?
Only if they are marked for aluminum: CO/ALR for switches rated 20 amps or less, and CO/ALR or AL-CU for receptacles of that rating. Devices marked only for copper need a copper pigtail, and ESA's notice says push-in terminations must never be used with aluminum. ESA's bulletin also says the homeowner replacement exemption does not cover aluminum wiring, so this work needs a notification.
Does pigtailing mean opening the walls in my Whitby home?
No. Pigtailing is done inside the existing boxes at each receptacle, switch and fixture, so walls stay closed. Full replacement is the option that involves fishing new copper cable and, in some rooms, opening drywall or plaster.
