Electrical Services in East York
East York was a municipality of its own for most of the twentieth century, first as a township and then as a borough, until it became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998. The Town of Leaside merged with it in 1967, and from then on East York Hydro, not Toronto Hydro, supplied power to Leaside. Today Toronto Hydro serves the whole district again, from Leaside and Thorncliffe Park to Old East York and Danforth East York.
The houses here are old by Toronto standards. In the Beaches-East York ward, 55.3% of homes predate 1961, close to double the citywide share, so many East York houses may still carry earlier electrical systems: knob and tube circuits that were never fully removed, fuses in place of breakers, and service masts and meter bases that have weathered for decades. Toronto Hydro's meter replacement program began in May 2024 and runs for about five years, and a Customer Action Form left by its crew means customer-owned equipment needs repair before the new meter can go in. Attic insulation projects and new carbon monoxide alarm rules also bring older wiring into view.
KV Bear Electrical Inc. is a Licensed Electrical Contractor (ECRA/ESA 7014730) based in Oshawa offering electrician service to East York homeowners: knob and tube assessment and replacement, meter base and service mast repairs, panel upgrades, aluminum wiring repairs, EV charger circuits, pot lights and renovation wiring. The company files the ESA notification for each job and provides the ESA Certificate of Acceptance once ESA accepts the work. What East York Homeowners Should Know
Toronto Hydro's meter crews can leave a Customer Action Form when customer-owned equipment needs repair before a new meter goes in. Only a licensed electrician may make those repairs, since Toronto Hydro states it is not authorized to fix customer-owned equipment, and the homeowner must then tell the utility's Customer Action Form team the work is done so the crew can return and install the meter.

East York Hydro was absorbed into the new Toronto Hydro at amalgamation.

The 2021 Ontario Electrical Safety Code dropped the rules for installing it, but the Code is not retroactive, so existing knob and tube does not automatically have to come out.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electrical Services in East York
Toronto Hydro left a Customer Action Form at my East York house. What happens next?
The form means something you own needs fixing before the crew can install the new meter. Under Toronto Hydro's ownership rules, the service mast, the clevis, the meter base and the conduit are the homeowner's, while the service wire and the meter are Toronto Hydro's. Hire a Licensed Electrical Contractor to make the repairs and file the ESA notification for them. When the work is complete, contact Toronto Hydro's Customer Action Form team so the crew can come back and finish the meter installation.
Can the knob and tube wiring in my Leaside house stay where it is?
Sometimes. ESA Flash 25-05-FL allows existing concealed knob and tube that feeds lighting and receptacle circuits to remain when it is protected by a 15 A fuse or breaker, no outlets have been added that overload the circuit, and the visible conductors are in sound condition. The same notice lists unsafe practices: replacing 15 A fuses with 20 or 30 A fuses, using extension cords as permanent wiring, and removing ground pins to fit two-pin receptacles, and it says 2-pin to 3-pin adapters are not permitted. Many insurers will not cover a house with knob and tube, so ESA recommends an assessment by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, which looks only at the electrical system and is separate from a home inspection.
Do I need an electrician before insulating the attic of my East York house?
It is worth having the attic wiring checked first. If old knob and tube runs through the attic, loose-fill insulation should not be piled against it, according to Natural Resources Canada, and the same caution applies to exposed recessed light fixtures. A Licensed Electrical Contractor can tell you which attic circuits are still live knob and tube and whether they should be replaced before the insulation goes in.
Which smoke and carbon monoxide alarms does an older East York house need?
Ontario requires a working smoke alarm on every storey of a home and outside all sleeping areas, and the province makes installing and maintaining them the homeowner's job. In Toronto, a house with a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage also needs a working carbon monoxide alarm next to each sleeping area and, since January 1, 2026, on every storey. If you want alarms wired into the house rather than battery-powered, that wiring is electrical work that needs an ESA notification.
Can a handy neighbour help with the wiring in my East York home?
No. ESA allows a homeowner to do electrical work in their own home after filing a notification with ESA, but friends, family members and neighbours are not allowed to do it for them. If you pay anyone to do the work, the law requires a Licensed Electrical Contractor, and the ECRA/ESA licence number should appear on the quote.
