How Much Does an EV Charger Installation Cost in Ontario?

How Much Does an EV Charger Installation Cost in Ontario?

If you have recently purchased an electric vehicle or you are considering one, one of your first questions is likely about the cost of getting a home charger installed. The short answer is that most Level 2 EV charger installations in Ontario cost between $800 and $2,500 — but that range depends on several factors specific to your home. Let us break down what goes into that number so you can plan accordingly.

Level 1 vs Level 2 Charging

A Level 1 charger plugs into a standard 120V household outlet. It is the slowest option, adding roughly 5-8 kilometres of range per hour. For most daily drivers, that means overnight charging will not fully replenish a depleted battery.

A Level 2 charger connects to a 240V circuit — the same type of outlet used by an electric dryer or stove. It adds 30-50 kilometres of range per hour, which means most EVs go from empty to full overnight. For most Ontario homeowners, Level 2 is the practical choice.

What Affects the Installation Cost

The cost of a Level 2 charger installation depends on a handful of variables:

Distance from your panel to the charger location. If your panel is in the basement and the charger is going in the garage directly above, the wire run is short and the cost is lower. If the charger is on the opposite side of the house, the longer wire run increases material and labour costs.

Panel capacity. A Level 2 charger typically requires a 40-50 amp dedicated circuit. If your panel has spare capacity, the electrician can add the circuit directly. If your panel is at capacity — or if you have an older 60-amp or 100-amp panel — you may need a panel upgrade first. Panel upgrades add $2,500 to $5,000 to the total cost but are a separate investment that benefits your entire home.

Charger type. Hardwired chargers are permanently connected and tend to deliver slightly faster charging. Plug-in chargers connect to a NEMA 14-50 outlet and can be unplugged and moved. The electrical work is similar for both.

Permit and inspection fees. EV charger installations in Ontario require an ESA permit. The permit cost is typically $100-$200 and is included in most electrician quotes.

A Typical EV Charger Installation Breakdown

For a straightforward installation where the panel has spare capacity and the charger location is near the panel, here is a rough breakdown:

Dedicated 40-50 amp circuit (wire, breaker, conduit): $400-$800. Labour for installation: $300-$600. ESA permit and inspection: $100-$200. Charger mounting: $100-$200.

Total: $800-$1,800 for a typical installation.

If a panel upgrade is needed, add $2,500-$5,000 for the upgrade.

Ontario Rebates and Incentives

Ontario's EV charger incentive landscape has changed over the years. As of early 2026, there is no active provincial rebate specifically for home EV charger installations, though some municipal programs and utility incentives may be available depending on your location. It is worth checking with your local utility — some offer time-of-use rates that make overnight charging significantly cheaper.

Do You Need a Panel Upgrade?

Not always. If your home has a 200-amp panel with spare breaker space, you are likely fine. If your home has a 100-amp panel, it depends on what else is drawing power — a 100-amp panel may be able to handle an EV charger if there is room, but it is close to the limit.

If your panel is 60 amps (common in older Ontario homes), a panel upgrade is almost certainly needed before adding an EV charger circuit. This is not a bad thing — a panel upgrade benefits your entire home and adds capacity for future needs as well.
