What Is Knob and Tube Wiring and Why Does It Need to Go?

Knob-and-tube (K&T) wiring was standard in homes built before the 1950s. It uses ceramic knobs and tubes to route individual wires through your walls and ceilings — with no ground wire and no modern insulation.

The wiring itself was well-built for its time. The problem is that it was designed for a world with far less electrical demand, it has no grounding, and decades of aging, modification, and insulation added around it have created real safety risks. Many insurance companies in Ontario now require knob-and-tube removal before they will issue or renew a policy.

At KV Bear Electrical (ECRA/ESA 7014730), we remove knob-and-tube wiring and replace it with modern copper wiring, new circuits, and a properly grounded system. We handle the ESA permit, the inspection, and the documentation your insurance company needs.

How We Remove Knob and Tube Wiring

1

Assessment

We trace the existing K&T wiring throughout your home to understand the full scope. Some homes have had partial upgrades over the decades, so we need to identify exactly what is still active.

2

Planning

We map out the new wiring routes, determine circuit requirements, and provide a detailed quote. If a panel upgrade is needed, we include that in the plan.

3

Removal & Rewiring

We de-energize and remove the active knob-and-tube circuits, run new copper wiring, install modern outlets with proper grounding, and connect everything to your panel.

4

Inspection & Documentation

ESA inspection is completed and you receive a Certificate of Inspection. We also provide documentation for your insurance company confirming the K&T wiring has been removed and replaced.

Knob and Tube Removal Cost

Full knob-and-tube removal for a typical Ontario home ranges from $8,000 to $20,000+ depending on the size of the home, accessibility, and the amount of K&T wiring present. Homes with partial K&T are typically on the lower end. We provide a thorough assessment and detailed quote so you know exactly what the job involves.

KV Bear was recommended to us by a friend. We wanted to install a Tesla charger only to find out our electrical panel was known for faulting resulting in an electrical fire. He showed us signs of the panel arcing. The work was clean, professional, and fast! We are so happy we hired a professional.
