Common Electrical Code Violations in Ontario Homes

Common Electrical Code Violations in Ontario Homes

Even well-maintained Ontario homes can have electrical code violations hiding in plain sight. Some are the result of aging systems, others come from DIY work or renovations done without permits. Here are the most common ones we encounter.

Missing GFCI Protection

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets are required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoor areas, and near any water source. Many older Ontario homes lack them entirely. GFCI outlets are relatively inexpensive to install and can prevent electrocution in wet areas.

No AFCI Protection

Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter breakers are now required for bedroom circuits in Ontario. They detect electrical arcing — a leading cause of house fires — and shut the circuit off before a fire can start. Many older homes have standard breakers in bedroom circuits that do not provide this protection.

Overcrowded Panels

Double-tapped breakers (two wires on one breaker) are a common violation. Each circuit should have its own breaker. Double-tapping can lead to tripping issues and is a code violation.

Missing Junction Box Covers

Every electrical junction box must have a cover plate. Open junction boxes in basements, attics, and crawl spaces are common and easy to fix, but they expose live wiring that could be accidentally contacted.

Improper Outdoor Wiring

Outdoor outlets and fixtures must use weather-rated boxes and GFCI protection. We frequently see indoor-rated components used outside, which can fail in wet conditions and create shock hazards.

Unpermitted Work

Additions, basement finishes, and renovations done without an ESA permit are technically code violations. The work may or may not meet code — the point is that it was never inspected. Unpermitted work can create problems during home sales and insurance claims.

Most of these issues are fixable with straightforward electrical work. The important thing is identifying them before they become safety problems or deal-breakers during a home sale. An electrical inspection from KV Bear Electrical (ECRA/ESA 7014730) can identify these issues and give you a prioritized plan for resolving them.
