Why You Should Only Hire an ESA-Licensed Electrician in Ontario

Why You Should Only Hire an ESA-Licensed Electrician in Ontario

In Ontario, electrical work must be performed by a contractor licensed through the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) under the ECRA (Electrical Contractor Registration Agency) programme. This is not a suggestion — it is the law. Yet many homeowners unknowingly hire unlicensed contractors, and the consequences can be serious.

What an ESA Licence Means

An ECRA/ESA licence confirms that the contractor is legally authorized to perform electrical work in Ontario, has met the qualification requirements (including having a qualified Master Electrician), carries the required insurance, and is subject to ESA oversight and inspection.

When you hire a licensed electrician, the work is permitted and inspected by the ESA. You receive a Certificate of Inspection for every permitted job — a legal document that confirms the work meets the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.

Risks of Unlicensed Work

Unlicensed electrical work is not inspected, which means there is no independent verification that it was done safely or to code. If something goes wrong — an electrical fire, a shock, or a system failure — your insurance company may deny the claim if the work was not permitted and inspected. When you sell your home, unpermitted electrical work can delay or derail the sale.

Beyond the legal and financial risks, there is the basic safety concern. Electrical work done incorrectly can kill. It is one of the few trades where cutting corners has genuinely life-threatening consequences.

How to Verify a Licence

You can verify any Ontario electrical contractor's licence on the ESA website. The contractor should be willing to provide their ECRA/ESA licence number upfront. If they are reluctant, that is a red flag.

KV Bear Electrical holds ECRA/ESA licence #7014730. You can verify this directly through the ESA. We are fully insured with liability and WSIB coverage, and every permitted job we complete receives an ESA Certificate of Inspection. It is not optional for us — it is how we operate on every single project.
