7 Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs Replacing

7 Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs Replacing

Not sure if your electrical panel is still up to the task? Here are seven signs that it may be time for a replacement.

1. Breakers That Trip Frequently

Occasional tripping is normal, but if breakers trip regularly — especially not during heavy load — it suggests the panel may be struggling to keep up. This is one of the most common early warning signs.

2. Burning Smell or Hot Panel

If you can smell a burning or hot plastic odour near the panel, or if the panel feels warm to the touch, that is a serious concern. Heat at electrical connections can indicate loose wiring, overloaded circuits, or a failing breaker.

3. Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic Panel

These brands have well-documented safety issues. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels are known for breakers that fail to trip during overloads — a leading cause of house fires. If you have one of these panels, we strongly recommend replacement regardless of age.

4. Lights That Flicker or Dim

If your lights flicker or dim noticeably when large appliances kick in — the air conditioner starts, the refrigerator compressor cycles — it can indicate that the panel is at or near capacity and struggling to handle the load.

5. Still Using a Fuse Box

Fuse boxes predate modern breaker panels and are significantly limited in capacity and safety features. Most insurance companies now require a breaker panel replacement for coverage.

6. Visible Damage or Corrosion

Any visible scorch marks, rust, or corrosion on the panel is a clear sign that something has gone wrong. Do not ignore visible damage to electrical components.

7. Not Enough Circuits

If you are constantly using power bars and extension cords throughout your home, or if adding an EV charger, hot tub, or major appliance requires tricky circuit juggling, your panel capacity is the limiting factor.
